Cyber crimes include:

  • Spamming
  • Downloading illegal and copyrighted materials
  • Malicious cyber attacks through the use of viruses
  • Identity theft

The internet is an excellent source of information and a useful communication tool. However, its anonymous nature and ease of use allow for exploitation and other malicious practices to occur. A common cyber crime affecting internet users is known as identity theft. Using sophisticated tools and techniques, users can acquire sensitive information about others including credit card pins, social security numbers, usernames, and passwords. These can be used to commit fraud and make unwanted charges under someone else's identity.

In addition to identity theft, illegal downloads and hacking are common problems found in cyberspace. Copyrighted and illegal materials are often distributed using programs which feature the internet's anonymity and file-transferring capabilities. Downloading such material is considered to be theft and copyright infringement by law. As the internet continues to grow, new cyber crime laws and regulations will have to be implemented to maintain order in this new virtual domain.
