Depending upon how many prior DUI offenses have been cited, a DUI alcohol program will be recommended by a court for an offender charged with driving under the influence. A person who is charged with a DUI for the first time is sentenced to a First Offender Program which is a 3 month long, 30 hour education and counseling program. Repeat offenders are sentenced to longer programs with more intensive education and therapy.
A person does not have to be over the legal alcohol limit to become a danger on the road. With this in mind, many jurisdictions require DUI programs for those charged with reckless driving while still under the legal limit. Such programs are known as Wet Reckless Programs. DUI programs are meant to reduce repeat offenses of driving while intoxicated and help keep the roads safe.
