Affidavit - A written or spoken statement given under oath to be entered into a case.

Chain of Custody -A concept applying to the documentation and handling of evidence in order to ensure validity and integrity.

Counter Surveillance - The process of avoiding or making it difficult to be under surveillance. The attempt to discover whether a subject is under surveillance and under what circumstances.

Database - A large collection of data, usually computerized, and information that has been organized for analysis purposes.

Due Diligence - A process of systematically analyzing data in order to identify risks associated with a case.

Evidence - Kinds of proof entered into consideration during a trial. Evidence can include testimony, records, objects, documents, and certificates.

Forensic Science - The application of many kinds of sciences used to answer questions of interest in the legal system. Forensic science is used for both criminal and civil cases.

Interrogation - The process of gathering information from a suspect through the use of intense conversation.

Interview - The process of a questioning a person to determine their knowledge and recollection of a subject under investigation.

Retainer - A payment from a client made to get a commitment from a private detective to handle the client's case

Surveillance - The close observation of a person, group or place under suspicion.

Testimony - The process of testifying before a court and jury. Detectives are often called to the stand to answer questions regarding the investigation.
